What is hydro excavation?

Two things happen at once. High-pressure water cuts the ground into slurry, and a vacuum on the truck lifts that slurry straight into a holding tank. Nothing hard ever touches the service you’re digging around. You’ll hear the same job called hydrovac, vacuum digging or NDD excavation. Around Brisbane, non destructive digging almost always means this method.

Why not just use an excavator?

An excavator moves more dirt for less money. Nobody’s arguing that.

The real comparison is two people with shovels, working slowly around something nobody can see, because the plans are twenty years old and the as-builts were never updated. Hydro excavation in Brisbane replaces that. A precise hole a metre down takes minutes. By hand it takes an hour, leaves a crater, and the line is still at risk.

Questions we get asked

Most services sit in the first two or three metres, and that's where the majority of our work happens. Deeper holes are possible with extension hoses. Once a hole is deep enough for a person to enter it, shoring or a cage goes in first.
No. Water handles clay, fill, sand and compacted spoil well, and Brisbane clay is close to ideal for it. Shale, tuff and boulders slow it to a crawl or stop it outright. Ground changes street to street here, so if we think you'll hit rock, we'll tell you before we mobilise and put a saw or a breaker through the hard layer first. Yes, when it's run properly, and that qualifier is doing real work. There's no blade or tooth to cut a cable, which removes the single biggest cause of strikes.
